Download YouTube thumbnails in HD

Every YouTube video comes with a set of thumbnail images that YouTube serves at fixed sizes. The largest is 1280×720, the file YouTube calls maxresdefault, and it only exists when the channel uploaded its own thumbnail in HD. Below it come the 640×480 and 480×360 versions, which YouTube generates for every video, including the ones where the creator never uploaded a picture and YouTube picked a frame instead. This tool lists the sizes available for the link you paste, so you can take the biggest one or a smaller one if all you need is a preview.

That's why two videos from the same channel can give different results. A recent upload with a designed thumbnail comes out at 1280×720; an old video, a livestream replay or a clip with an automatic thumbnail may only have the smaller sizes. If the HD version isn't listed, it's because YouTube never published it for that video, and no thumbnail grabber can produce a bigger file than the one YouTube stores.

If you run a channel, downloading your own thumbnail at full size lets you check how the text reads, whether a face gets cut off and how it looks next to competing videos, without digging through YouTube Studio. Designers and editors save thumbnails as references for style, layout and color, or to build a mood board before shooting a new series.

Other uses are quieter: a cover for a playlist on another platform, a picture for a blog post or a presentation that embeds the video, moderation teams that need a record of what a thumbnail showed at a given moment, and archives that keep the thumbnail next to the video's metadata. In all of these, remember that the image belongs to the channel: personal use and reference are fine, passing it off as your own isn't.
